First Scholastic Book Order of the Year

The first scholastic book order is coming home.  I like Scholastic because they have the most popular and current books for kids at the best prices.  Even if you aren’t ordering, the flyers are still fun to look through, and can sometimes spark conversations about books with your kids if it is a book or series they’ve read.

If you are ordering, please send the orders back or order online by this Friday, September 30th.  You can send one check for all of your kids, even if the catalogs are different.  Cash is ok, too.  If needed, I can usually even hunt up change. I appreciate the orders because they help our class get free books, but if you are not ordering, tell your kids there will be plenty of other opportunities, so they don’t need to fret! :)

If you are ordering online, you can use a credit or debit card. You will need to register an account (an easy process) and then put in our class activation code. It is HPDYJ.

You can also search for our class by city, state, school and then my name should show up.   After the first order, you shouldn’t need an activation code again, you will use your user name and password instead.

Please contact me with any questions.  Thanks for reading with your kids!

Special Edition News

September 15, 2011

What a change a few days can make. The last newsletter was sent from the school with the doors closed and the air conditioners working at full speed.  Today the doors are closed to keep out the cool air. At least some of us enjoy the more temperate climate.

We thought it would be a good opportunity to update parents on a few activities that are coming up at Pleasantview. You are always welcome to contact the school directly if you have questions and we also have websites that are available for you to access via your computer. Listed below are three addresses where you can gain information. We will continue to add information to these sites so feel free to check in on a regular basis.

Upcoming Events

STATE COUNTING DAY—September 20 is the day when student enrollment is counted for state funding.  It is very important that all students be in attendance on the 20th. Virtual students also have attendance requirements but they are slightly different from on-site students.  Please contact the office if you have any questions concerning either program.

Highway/PA Clean up—We will have a post state-fair highway clean-up day on September 21.  Students have permission slips that will need to be signed and returned to the school. In addition to the highway project, the Cornerstone class will pick up trash in the Pleasantview business area. Those students who do not wish to participate in the highway project will clean the area around the school.

Following the cleaning activities, we will have a cookout for all students and staff.  We will not have the regular school lunch but will have hot dogs, chips, cookies, and juice for everyone. There is no cost for students or staff.

Parent/Teacher Conferences--We will be hosting parent/teacher conferences on September 22 from noon to 8:00.  Please call Patty to set up a time to meet with teachers.

School Pictures--Lifetouch will take school pictures on October 3.  Information and picture packets will be sent at a later date.

Cornerstone Update

We have had some fun and busy days in Cornerstone recently.  Our Grandparents Day biscuit making, lunch, and tour of Glenn’s Bulk Foods last Friday was an enjoyable morning of learning, cooking, and family. The biscuits were delicious! I have posted new pictures on our website--I’d love for you to visit and check them out at pacornerstoneclass.weebly.com.

Thanks for the wonderful family turn out Tuesday at the state fair.  It always makes the day so much better when it’s shared with loved ones.  Wednesday, we celebrated the Chinese Moon Festival with mooncakes brought over from Shanghai last week.  It’s fascinating to try new tastes and learn interesting facts about different cultures.

This week will go by fast due to collaboration Monday and the state fair Tuesday. Next week we have Reporting Day.  Patty will be contacting you to see what time will work for you to come in and talk about your child’s first few weeks of school. Thanks so much for all of your support!

~PA Virtual Program~

Our virtual enrollment has continued to change these first few weeks of school and we are back to about the same size we were last year, which is an exciting place to be! We appreciate our families who have chosen to work with us this year and look forward to getting to know each of them better. We have had one virtual count day for the state and remind parents the final one will be this Tuesday, September 20th. All virtual students need to put in a full day of school and parents need to complete the FTE form and get it back to school in a timely manner for their child to remain enrolled in our program. :) Parents can find important dates and information concerning this and other things on our new PA VIRTUAL PROGRAM WEBSITE - pavirtualprogram.weebly.com. Check it frequently for updates. We thank parents for all they do and appreciate their continued support.

~Virtual K-8~

We are off to another great start! Our Kindergarten through 8th grade students have had a busy time already. Kindergarten students are learning about different places around the globe by exploring with Mr. Traveler. Older students are learning about the continents, oceans, and early exploration of the earth. In science students are studying mass and learning about the equal-armed balance and how the instrument provides a way of comparing masses of objects. Students are completing the experiment "Mass of Gas" to investigate whether gas truly does have mass by making a simple balance and comparing two different volumes, captured by means of balloons. Others in science are studying about the parts of a plant's circulation system by experimenting with food coloring and celery to "see" how the circulation system works. Students are also working diligently in their writing assignments and many interesting things are being created and shared. It looks like a wonderful year ahead!

Dear Cornerstone Families,

Next Friday, September 9th, we will be celebrating Grandparents Day in Cornerstone Class.  We are currently reading a book called Justin and the Best Biscuits in the World.  In the book, a boy who struggles to do anything right in his home of neat and tidy females, visits his grandpa’s ranch and learns some life skills including making fantastic biscuits.

Glenn’s Bulk Foods has agreed to give us a tour of their unique store, and I will be letting the students help find items on our shopping list.  Then we will proceed back to PA to let students and grandparents make and bake biscuits together as they make a movie of their experience. Grandparents are then invited to stay for lunch if desired.  We are having chicken fingers and the price is $3.20 for an adult lunch.

All grandparents or “adopted” grandparents are invited to attend.  Grandparents can meet us at Glenn’s (near the school in Pleasantview) at 10 am, or can come to PA a bit earlier if they want to transport their grandkids over.

We all enjoyed our pumpkin decorating last year and are hoping for a wonderful day this year as well. Please fill out the sheet below, detach on the line, and send it back so I know how many to expect.

Please call Patty or I with any questions.

Thanks,

Mrs. Honeycutt

August Announcements

It is great to have students and staff back in the building.  We are now a school rather than just a building.    Everyone has hit the ground running and there is a great deal of activity in the classrooms and throughout the school.

Just the facts

  • The bus route for PA has been greatly improved and students are now arriving at school by 8:30 each morning.  That will allow all classes to begin at that time.  The bus will leave the school in the afternoon at 3:35.  In order to meet that schedule, students will remain in class until 3:30.  Unless there are unusual circumstances, we request that students not be picked up prior to the 3:30 bus dismissal time.
  • The elementary students will be attending the Kansas State Fair on September 13.  We are still working on the exact detail but I would anticipate meeting at the fairgrounds at about 8:30 and having students being picket up at about 2:30-3:00.  More information with specific details will be sent next week. High school students will have a regular school day at PA on the 13th unless they have a specific project that needs to be completed at the fair,   These projects will be approved by Mr. Tolle.
  • We are planning a highway cleanup project for September 7.  This is part of our adopt-a-highway community service project.  We are going to try to pick up debris before the State Fair and again after the fair ends.  Permission forms and information will be sent with students next week.
  • The Pleasantview area now has a tornado warning siren that is located very near the school.  It has been tested and the volume level is very good.  It is a great safety addition to the school and community.  Our school tornado drills will be conducted in conjunction with their monthly tests.
  • No School on September 5—Labor Day
Enrollment Information and Numbers

We continue to receive and accept new students at Pleasantview Academy.  We currently have a total enrollment, on-site and virtual, of more than 100 students.  We can effectively handle more students and would welcome additional students.  If you know someone who is looking for the type of education we can provide, please have them contact the school.  Our on-site enrollment will remain open until September 20 and our virtual enrollment will close on September 10.

VERY IMPORTANT DATE

The official date for counting students/enrollment is September 20.  The state level of funding for all districts in Kansas is determined by the attendance on that day.  Needless to say, it is very important that all students are in attendance on that date.  Please contact the school if you have any questions.

Cornerstone News

The last couple of days have been filled with writing, math explorations, reading mini conferences, and a science experiment about heat.  Do you know why dark clothes make you feel warmer than light clothes?  Ask your student!

I have exciting news to share.  I’ve started a Cornerstone website!  I hope it will be an easy way to stay up to date on happenings in Cornerstone.  I will post announcements, a copy of

correspondences sent home, homework and project information, class projects, pictures, and links we use at school.  I finally found an easy, free, educational web service that I feel I can update frequently and easily.  I am planning to have Mr. Tolle link it to our PA page, but the direct address until that link is established is

http://pacornerstoneclass.weebly.com.  I would love for you to visit!

As I’ve already sent one newsletter home, I will keep this one short. But I would like to say that I am so excited about the start of this year.  The students have been well behaved, fun, inquisitive, and a joy to be around.  I’m looking forward to a great year!  As always, please call, email, or send a note with any questions or comments.

Virtual High School

Welcome back to school! It is good to be working with students again.

•                Students received from me a plagiarism policy. I need to have these returned to me with a parent and student signature.

•                Right now students are becoming familiar with the new OdysseyWare website. There have been many positive changes that you should be aware of. The most important of these changes is the planner function. Parents can now know of current and past due homework by clicking on the “my courses” tab in OdysseyWare.

•                Many students are enrolled in a careers course this year. This course will allow for

•                reflection on future goals, skills, and education for the future.

•                I have been receiving some very good writing from students and have been impressed with how hard everyone is working. Keep up the good work!

•                See my blog at http://ragsdale2010.blogspot.com/ for updates and reminders throughout the year!

News from the Middle

Middle school math students started the year with a diagnostic test and are now working with fractions and decimals.  In science they conducted their first science experiment and presented it to their peers and are now studying Earth Science.

Mr. Dyke

To start the year, each student created graffiti art that shared something about themselves.  In Reading, we have read many stories that range from the great Chicago fire of 1817 to mysteries about magic, attics, and UFOs.  We are so fortunate to have PE daily.  We are beginning to branch out for social studies, but for now, please ask our 5th-8th grade students about latitude, longitude, and the Prime Meridian.

I look forward to visiting with you at parent teacher conferences.

Ms. Setter

~PA VIRTUAL PROGRAM~

Students in kindergarten through high school, as well as the Diploma Plus Program (our diploma completion option), are off to a great start this year. Enrollment is growing each day and will be open through September 5th.

Students using the OdysseyWare curriculum are getting used to a new format. There have been many changes including a section that helps both parents and students know what lessons should be completed for the day, and what to expect for the week. The overall progress section allows parents to see the percentage of lessons that have been completed as the year progresses. We hope these features help parents as they monitor their student’s progress.

We are excited about new year, and working with our new families as well as our returning ones.

Book Worm News

Once again this year we are having “literary lunchtime” with 10 minutes of reading before going outdoors.   Grades K-8 have been in the library to check out the first round of books.

Kudos to students and parents; we only misplaced two books last year, as opposed to 15 or more in past years!  Thanks for being extra careful!  We have new books on the shelf and more to come, as well as a small rotating collection on the shelves of the cafeteria for lunchtime reading.

Cornerstone is learning some of the ways music can vary and words to use for those variations.  We have started with tempo, dynamics, and pitch.  We played a dynamics game and are also working on several songs as a group.

Our art time is being used to create a mixed media picture in keeping with the classroom theme “Cornerstone Corral”.  We are tearing and layering paper, coloring and drawing details, and adding yarn lariats. The talented cowboys and cowgirls will exhibit their pictures in the Hall Gallery when finished.  Stop by and see how they throw a loop!

Spirit and Pride

Students were given an envelope with Spirit and Pride written on the outside. Inside is a form with a variety of school apparel items. Tee shirts, Hooded Sweatshirts and Backpack with the Pleasantview Academy logo on them, if you would like to order any of these items return the envelope to the school by Friday, September 2nd. Include your payment you can use a credit card, check or money order. Please make your checks to Spirit and Pride. Should you have any questions, Please contact Patty.

Please feel free to contact me at the school at any time if you have questions or if I can be of assistance.
